ABBEY OF ST HILAIRE 2006 CHARDONNAY

  

The label definitely shows the duality of cultures in this part of Italy (Sud Tyrol/Alto Adige).  There are just enough Italian words on the label to give you a clue that this isn’t a German wine. It says Pinot Bianco on it, alongside of Weissburgunder, but this rose, no matter what you want to call it, is one sensational bottle of Pinot Blanc.  Inviting nose of pears, nuts, white stone fruit and racy minerality.  Punch up front, zingy acidity, and surprising length, this is a complete, vivid white from one of those uniquely committed cooperatives from the region.  The winery got ‘winery of the year’ from Italy’s Gambero Rosso in 2000, and their winemaker has been given great recognition as well.  Given what this wine delivers, it is a deal at this kind of price and will pair magnificently with a wide range of dishes.  A must!
