CALLEJO 2005 CUATRO MESES EN BARRICA

WA 90 $16.99

Quantity:

From Wine Advocate: The Cuatro Meses en Barrica is made from 100% Tempranillo aged 4 months in barrel.  Purple in color, this grapy wine shows virtually no oak influence in its blackberry, licorice, and expresso roast aromatics.  It is not complicated but it offers layers of black fruits and ripe tannins on the palate as well as lots of pleasure.  This hedonistic effort is an excellent value.

Here’s another new face from Spain in general and the Ribera in particular. The label states"4 meses en barrica" which tells you that is spent four months in oak and that it is technically a tinto joven (young red) because at the next level up, Crianza, the law requires one year in wood. What the label doesn’t tell you is how engaging, plush and flavorful it is, lacking the rough edge a lot of good jovens still have. It also doesn’t mention the 90 from Advocate (neither did the EBob website but it was in the print version) on the label either or the comments like "expresso roast aromatics...hedonistic...excellent value", correct comments all. Can there be too many delicious, well priced go-to reds in the cellar? We’ll get back to you on that one but we don’t think so. Excellent value, like the man said.
