There are lots of more serious things to worry about than what wine will finally help Pinotage break through to mainstream America, but if there was ever such a wine, this could be it.

South African wines as a category are not widely embraced because they tend to be on the lean side and often blatantly showcase an unfamiliar terroir. On top of it all, the really exciting examples like Boekenhoutskloof and Rust En Vrede tend to be higher priced (the names don’t help much either), so a lot of folks won’t take the plunge. This one is nicely priced, has an appealing, fleshy mouth feel, plenty of evident sweet fruit and pretty tame acidity. In short, you could haul off and drink it should the mood strike, something we say guardedly about So. African reds, and, while it has some terroir notes, they somehow ‘translate’ better here.
