Several months ago we sent out a closeout offer on the 2008 Ahnfeldt Cab. Needless to say you folks know a great deal on Cabernet when you see it and the 40 cases that we had in stock sold out that same day. We wondered if the '08 was going to be the last 'closeout' deal available from Ahnfeldt given that we have been selling these for consecutive vintages starting with the 2004. Apparently they have one more vintage of Cab to push through, in addition to a few other bottlings, before they are going to declare themselves 'ready' for the new era. Fine with us. If you haven't heard, Paul Hobbs signed on recently as their consulting winemaker and this '09 Cab is the second vintage that he wrapped up. So why are these wines on closeout? The short story is that they were backed up on inventory when they were selling it at their original listed price between $50-60. Now it looks like they are caught up with the release of this '09 Cab and a new superstar winemaker on board. As to where it goes from here, we don't know. What we do know is that these continue to be some of the best buys on quality Napa juice in the marketplace.
As with many of the '09 Cabs, this Ahnfeldt Cabernet 2009 has a solid backbone with pure flavors of black fruits, cassis, and notes of minerality. The Paul Hobbs touch has made this Cab feel more ample yet easily approachable now. The 2006 Quid Pro Quo is their Bordeaux-styled blend and with a few years of bottle age, this meritage has become a favorite for our in-store customers. Loads of layered dark fruit mingles with the ripe, settled tannins and very Napa notes of spice and mint to deliver an elegant, juicy, nicely tailored mouthful. Their 2009 is offered at the winery for $49, and this one was released for $60. We are offering the 2006 Quid Pro Quo for $29.99.
Also playing is the 2009 Provocative Cab which is a 'second label' from Ahnfeldt. However, at under $20, it can easily give a lot of other "first label" Cabs (which costs more) a run for their money. Some might note this is considered Cyber Monday, a day of particular note for online specials. For us, it's just Monday because we have great deals every day.
